O'Neil, who was in her high-school times at the time of the auditions, tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol during the first months of 2005. She was able to make it into the top tier of contestants when judges applauded her vocal ability. O'Neil received excellent praise from the judges. However, she suffered significant losses during the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted to the bottom three or bottom two and bottom two, respectively. They were stunned by the decision and informed the crowd the fact that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil did not make it to the bottom 3 again after a series of consistently outstanding performances. Her performance on September 7 of 2005 was awe-inspiring that judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie, becoming the 3rd Canadian Idol. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was announced by Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
